Assignment:
As we discuss adolescence and emerging adulthood, we must address a topic of great interest and great debate. With the development of self comes the conversation about developmental psychopathology. In an effort to understand how genetic and environmental factors influence our personality and overall well-being, there are a variety of factors to consider when typical developmental pathways diverge toward a pathological or atypical outcome.
Chapter of your textbook briefly discusses delinquency and defiance in adolescence. There is also an interesting documentary about brain development Inside the Teenage Brain., which quotes Jay Giedd: "Biology doesn't make teens rebellious or have purple hair or take drugs. It does not mean you are going to do drugs, but it gives you more of a chance to do that."
1. How does Chapter of your textbook and Inside the Teenage Brain video relate to nature vs. nurture?
2. What other factors contribute to rebelliousness, etc.?
3. Is engaging in deviant acts simply a normal and expected step in our cognitive development? Why or why not?
Here is another video that offers a perspective on the topic: The surprising psychology behind your urge to break the rules
Typically, when we talk about risky behaviors in adolescence, there is a major distinction: behaviors that would be risky regardless of the age OR behaviors that are risky because of the age at which they are performed (e.g., underage drinking).
Based on what you know about brain development during adolescence and early adulthood:
1. How should risky behaviors be punished?
2. Should things like sexting be a crime for teenagers?
3. Does your answer depend on if the individual involved was 13, 18, or 23? Why or why not?
4. If sexting should be considered a crime, how should those who get caught be punished or treated?
5. How might our behavior change as we progress toward adulthood and become capable of post-formal thought and progress in our capacity for moral thinking?
Craft your responses to the questions listed above using at least two scholarly sources, the videos provided, and your textbook. Please be mindful to cite your sources throughout your argument. Doing so provides the reader with a trail that shows where you found the support for which your argument is based, thus providing credibility.
