Discussion - Mineral Properties
This week we talked about different minerals. We discussed the molecular structure of the element, how the elemental units are arranged in the crystal, how the crystal is a self-assembling structure. We talked about various properties of different crystals and how these properties are related to their origin. We also talked about how the crystal beds formed within the earth and how they are mined.
Choose a topic from Chapter 3 that you find to be especially interesting. Do a little more research on it, and tell the rest of us what you have found.
Examples of topics: There are aspects of mineralogy that have a high economic impact, such as oil, coal, precious metals and gemstones. You might discuss how and where some of these are concentrated, mined or refined. Many crystals are rumored to have medicinal properties, because they were used by ancient man before western medicine became available. You might describe some specific properties of one type of crystal, and see whether you can find any scientific basis for this effect.
Types of research that you can do:
1. Read more in the textbook: Some of the topics in Chapter 3 are covered in more depth in subsequent chapters of the textbook. You can tell us about what you found.
2. Find a news story: Type a keyword, plus the word "News" from your topic into a Google search window. You should see a list of news stories about that topic. Describe the article or highlight at least one interesting thing that you learned from the article. Be sure to include the link, so we can read it.
3. Find out more on the internet or in the UB digital library.
