Instructions for Service-Learning Reflection Papers

The Reflection paper is a formalized review of all of the work you reflected on in your journal entries.

Discuss your performance in terms of initiative, professionalism, reliability, timeliness, and creativity. Include reflection on your University Day presentation. What were your strengths in this project? What were your weaknesses? What you would do differently on another service learning project.

The assessment submission must show you can proficiently assess or develop policies that will better necessitate social control, protection, and justice by applying the ability to:

1) Effectively communicate with criminal justice professionals and other citizens
2) Recognize the relationship of criminal justice system components and processes with society and government.
3) Apply appropriate constitutional, criminal and procedural law.
4) Effectively utilize scientific methods, evidence, findings and conclusions
5) Apply appropriate ethical principles, philosophies, theories and research.
6) Recognize human biases and employ emotional intelligence.
7) Recognize the impact of social stratification on criminal and social justice issues.
8) Project the impact of social change on criminal and social justice issues.

A proposal draft consisting of a comprehensive update to Sacramento's Crowd & Riot Control Manual.

1) Ensure all proposed policy changes are clearly identifiable (Additions, Deletions, Changes)

2) Utilize footnotes in the draft to note the reason(s) for each change in the manual (arguments based on a need for clarity/explicitness, research, theory, data, philosophy, issue, and so on.)

3) Areas of the manual you intend to leave as is may be left out of the proposal if immaterial.

4) Include counter arguments and evidence for potential opposition.

Overall, the proposal will be assessed on

1) The extent to which the proposal increases the effectiveness of the manual to ensure police conduct, procedures, and practices will in fact be universally (Sacramento/everywhere, now/future) facilitate social control, protection AND justice. Social Order, Just Deserts, Equity, Constitutional Rights for all

The ultimate proposal removes all possible weaknesses of the manual.

2) The amount and quality of the evidence (persuasiveness of theory, research, data, law, reasoning, philosophy, etc.) that the proposal includes in the footnotes.

3) The extent to which the video persuades one to consider the proposal.
