Write a three page paper that identifies and interprets the elements of art, principles of art, and the content of a painting. These topics are covered in the Part 1 Fundamentals section of your text, Gateways to Art. Use this resource and at least two additional scholarly resources (Wikipedia is not considered scholarly) to research one painting. You may evaluate any painting from any period of time but do not select highly famous paintings like the Mona Lisa, American Gothic, Starry Night, etc. Use either your text or the online collections of the following museums to select a painting:

? Use 1.5 spacing, 1" margins, and a 12 point size legible font.

? Include a title page (does not count toward page total) with a color image of the painting, the title of the painting, artist's name, date, size, and medium (oil, acrylic, watercolor, etc.). All of this information should be easily located with the painting.

? Any direct quotes and/or paraphrasing should be footnoted, and major ideas attributed to the original author. Remember any plagiarism is cause for failure of the assessment and the course.

? Use good writing techniques: proper sentence structure, paragraph development, correct spelling and grammar. Make sure you proofread your paper before submitting it.

? Your paper should also include a Works Cited or Bibliography of the resources you used. (does not count toward page total).

Use the following format for the content of your paper:

Introduction (approximately 1/2 page)

Describe the work and talk about the content of the work. Your research will help with this part of the paper, but your observations and interpretations from information gathered in Section 1.10 will also give you much of the needed information. Include the following as appropriate (not every question must be answered):

? Artist information-you may include general information that adds to the understanding of the painting. Only include biographical information if it adds meaning or context to the work.

? Painting title-especially if it adds meaning to the work.

? Date of work, medium, styles associated with the work and/or how it relates to the general style of the time in which this particular work was executed. Put the painting in historical context.

? Is the work representational, abstract or non-representational?

? What is the subject matter of the work? What is the painting about? Is it a still-life, landscape, portrait, etc.?

? What is the meaning of the painting? (I.e. What was the context in which the work was created? What is the story behind the work? What is the artist's intent with the work?)

Body of Paper (approximately 2 pages)

Address the formal elements and principles of art, how they affect the painting and how they communicate what the artist is saying. Each element and principle should be around 1 paragraph (minimum of 6 paragraphs for 3 elements, 3 principles.) The introduction of each paragraph will describe what the work looks like, and the majority of the paragraph will describe how the element or principle affects the work or contributes to the message. Remember when you are selecting elements and principles, there are no examples that are likely to be 'pure'.

Conclusion (approximately 1/2 page)

Discuss your feelings about the work. Be specific; saying 'it is really good' or 'I really like it' tells us nothing. Use art terms and discuss your interactions with the work including your reactions. Example: What made you interested in the painting in the first place? How does it make you feel? Does it remind you of anything from your past? Do the images relate to current cultural or political events?
