Case Study: Quality improvement (QI) models assist in implementing process improvement changes by providing a framework for health care professionals to follow. These models provide a systemic approach to problem solving in health care. This keeps providers from leaving out important steps in the process, creates a clear plan for communication and facilitates teamwork (Newcombe & Fry-Bowers, 2018).
Lean tools and principles have been used in healthcare to tackle possible causes of insufficiency (waste), reduce costs and increase the quality of services being provided. It induces various intangible positive impacts such as employee motivation and commitment, increase patient satisfaction and enhance safety. The methodology of Six Sigma was adopted because of its zero-tolerance mechanism. This mechanism helps minimize medical procedure errors. The Lean Six Sigma Model has been adopted in various care settings such as inpatient and outpatient diagnostics, radiology, surgical procedures and interventions (Tufail et al., 2021).
An example of using Lean Six Sigma would be for integrating passive immunity into a hospital facility. It was used during the Covid-19 pandemic to get quicker immunity into patients, compared to the vaccine. DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Implement, Control) was used to implement the technique into the hospital system. This was a five step process and quality improvement methodology. It was used to solve operational complications of the hospital. This process helped achieve short-term objectives, while providing direction for long-term policy formulation. It could be used to enhance the hospital's quality management system (Tufail et al., 2021).
