Case: There are a variety of laws and regulations in Canada that promote equity within and outside of the workplace. Two of these are the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Canada's Human Right's Legislation. Despite this legislation, equity gaps in the world of work still exist. For this reason, collective bargaining has been suggested as a mechanism to promote greater equity in the workplace.
Discuss why promoting equity at work may be beneficial for workers, employers, and society. Provide at least one example of an equity-related gap that currently exist in the world of work and whether and how can collective bargaining might be used to help address it.
What are the benefits and drawbacks of addressing equity through the process of collective bargaining, rather than through the legislative process? Can these approaches be used together?
