Scenario

Sunset Psychiatric Services is a 50-bed psychiatric hospital for youth and adolescents in Township, Minnesota. They also have three outpatient treatment facilities located in surrounding towns. Because Sunset Psychiatric Services is a small facility, you have multiple roles within the facility. You are the Director of HIM, Assistant Director of Compliance, and the official liaison between the facility and accrediting, certification, and licensure bodies.

While in your office, you received a phone call from Wanda Williams, the CEO of Sunset Psychiatric Services. She has a friend, Dr. Mark Martin, who has described a great need for psychiatric services for adults in the northern part of the state and is interested in opening a facility to meet that need. Dr. Martin has met with many healthcare professionals to learn about the process of opening a facility; however, he now wants to know about Joint Commission accreditation and state licensure procedures. The CEO knows you are an expert in those areas and asked if it would be all right with you to send your contact information to Dr. Martin. You happily agree to serve as a source of information for Dr. Martin.

A few days after the call with the CEO, you receive the following email from Dr. Martin:

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for agreeing to help me. Ms. Williams said you were the best person to answer my questions because of your work with your own facility. I am quite confused about the role of the Joint Commission and the purpose of state licensure. Can you explain them and the impact they have on healthcare?
