Textbook: Global Human Rights- An Annotated Reader by Dr. Marcheta Wright

Task

Respond to each of the three questions below with 2-3 well-developed paragraphs (200 - 300 words) written essentially in your own words. However, at least two relevant direct quotes should be integrated into the response for each question to support your comments. Proper in-text citations are expected as well as a correctly formatted reference page with full citations.

Each question should have its own separate response that is clearly identified. DO NOT write a single essay that blends the responses together!

I. Global Human Rights Foundations & Development:

Dr. Weston, in his essay entitled "Human Rights: Concepts and Content" discusses the historical evolution of human rights in a global context, including what he refers to as "generations" of international human rights. Discuss the three generations of human rights and how they relate to each other (do not merely describe each generation). Finally, include in your comments how the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reflects Weston's generational analysis. Be sure to include details from Weston's essay and GHR Chapter 1 in your response.

II. Civil/Political Rights:

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) has a strong emphasis on judicial process (due process) rights as a subset of civil and political rights. Discuss why having an impartial and independent judiciary for ensuring such civil and political rights is important. Include in your comments examples from the ‘Measure of a Man" and "The Drumhead" Star Trek episodes (both of which depict due process, although in very different ways). Be sure to use explicit details from the episodes and the ICCPR in your response.

III. Economic/Social/Cultural Rights:

Dr. Eide, in his essay entitled "Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights as Human Rights" discusses the relationship between civil/political rights and economic/social/cultural rights. Describe the key points of Eide's argument about that relationship. Then, thoroughly explain why you agree or disagree with his argument. Your response needs to include specific details from Eide's essay as well as GHR Chapter 3.
