Case Study: The first "Lychee and Dog Meat" festival took place in Yulin China in 2009, otherwise known as the Yulin dog meat festival. The event is for 10 days and usually runs from the 21st to the 30th of June during one of their hottest weeks of the year. This case has received a lot of negative coverage internationally and within China. Activists have reported that the festival's hygiene practices do not comply with Chinese regulations and animals are slaughtered with inhumane methods. If there are low shortages of dogs, you may also wonder where these extra dogs come from. Some festival visitors have reported seeing stolen animals with collars brought to Yulin from across China in cramped conditions. In addition to spreading rabies, the dog trade also increases the risk of cholera, according to the World Health Organization. Due to the festival's non-existence as an official event, the Yulin government is unable to stop it. Approximately 3 quarters of Yulin residents don't eat dog meat on a regular basis, according to a 2017 survey. Moreover, 69.5 percent of Chinese citizens never ate dog meat, and 64 percent wanted the Yulin festival to shut down in 2016. As part of its plans to crack down on dog meat consumption, China's government has referred to dogs as "companions".
