Question: Share your thoughts on your peers descriptions of coaching vs mentoring

Discuss which technique you find more helpful incorporating the example

Coaching is mainly used when trying to improve a person's on-the-job performance. It is more task oriented and tends to be more of a short-term improvement. Mentoring is more relationship based and focuses on long term improvement. Employees will gain trust in mentors by building relationships. (Kopp, 2014).

A scenario where coaching is a better method than mentoring is when a coach is trying to teach an employee a process. A good example at my work is when we go step by step on how to use specific portions of our software.

A scenario where a mentor is better then coaching when an employee is trying to develop their skills over time. At my work, my mentor continually works with me, has gotten to know me and the way I learn and we have gained a good relationship in developing my skills.
