Question: You are interning during your graduate program in sport psychology at a counseling center. Here are notes describing one of your clients: 23 years old, male, PhD student, BMI = 31 kg/m2 (classified as obese) . The participant had prior experiences with exercise (e.g., jogging, soccer, and swimming) but had become sedentary over the past 1-2 years due to a hectic schedule associated with his PhD. The participant wants to take part in an exercise intervention program but he does not know where to start. He is hoping to regain his motivation to exercise and establish a routine with your help. In addition, the participant has expectations of losing some weight through the intervention. However, your scope of practice is not to promote weight loss but rather to develop an autonomous motivation.
1. Discuss what can help with his motivation to start exercising and provide some healthy behavior strategies drawn from your learning this semester on how to cope positively with the stress this student may be experiencing with his life and schooling.
2. Imagery and mindfulness can prepare us to deal with adversity and stress management. In this part, PLEASE complete a maximum of a one-page imagery script you would work with, for this student to practice on his own. Feel free to record yourself in an unidentified YouTube Video and provide the link here if you prefer not to say your response
3. During the first six weeks, which goals and strategies would you recommend for this student in preparation to walk and jog a 5-km in the next three months?
4. Discuss the difference between self-efficacy and self-confidence. How would you introduce self-confidence and well-being concepts to him to help him live a healthier lifestyle? Be prepared to include example of post-it for positive self-talk here!
