Question: A simple, straightforward document called an advance directive allows patients to express their wishes if they become incapacitated and unable to communicate. Advance directives are recognized in every state, and millions of Americans have them as part of their medical records. They are embraced by healthcare professionals, attorneys, hospice professionals, and retiree organizations. The form allows a patient to appoint someone else, such as a family member or close friend, to speak for them if you cannot speak for themselves or speak for them at a time or in a circumstance they designate. Research the internet regarding advance directives, discuss what an advance directive does, and provide examples. What are the benefits and drawbacks of an advance directive? How does an advance directive help pain? And give examples. Besides what is stated above, what are your thoughts around advance directives, i.e., would you/do you have one?
