Assignment:

  • Revisit your discussion of "Western Civilization" in your Week 1 discussion post. What did you think "Western Civilization" meant at the beginning of this course or before enrolling in this course?
  • How have those impressions changed over the weeks of this course?
  • What surprises you in your notes about your prior impressions regarding Western Civilization?
  • How does history help inform your understanding of the present?

This was my Week 1 response: Western Civilization refers to the way people in Europe and North America lived and changed over thousands of years. I see it as a big tale that includes events like the rise of ancient Greece and Rome, the time of knights and castles, and the ideas that sparked the modern world. It's kind of like a giant puzzle with pieces from different times and places that fit together to make the picture of our history.
