Assignment:

This is a discussion topic for my Early World Literature class regarding Bhagavad-Gita.

For me, this work dramatizes several universal questions relevant even today, in the twenty-first century: How can we, under any circumstances, justify war and violence? Is there not a universal, moral law that overrides all personal and local interests? Should we not always think in terms of fundamental human rights, and should we not follow the mandates of conscience in resolving the perplexing issue of the necessity of using violence against others? Can any cause, national honor, for example, justify violence? This question was raised repeatedly in the previous century by pacifist movements, including pacifists who refused to serve in two world wars, since they could not condone the use of force under any circumstances.
