Criminology
Assignment - Preparing
To complete your third writing assignment, you need to watch the short documentary film: American Juggalo
Context
This documentary portrays "Juggalos" attending the Gathering of the Juggalos Festival. Juggalos are fans / followers of the Insane Clown Posse (a hip-hop group). Juggalos are considered a subculture (see PowerPoint), however, the FBI recently defined them as a "gang". This has important ramifications for members of this subculture because gang members often receive longer sentences if they commit crimes (e.g., similar to terrorists). As such, the Insane Clown Posse artists have been fighting to remove this stigma and FBI characterization.
Writing Assignment
After watching the documentary, you need to:
(1) Discuss two criminology theories (out of the 10) for understanding why individuals become Juggalos.
i. Cultural Conflict Theory
ii. Anomie / Strain Theory
iii. Social Disorganization Theory
iv. Differential Association / Social Learning Theory
v. Labeling Theory
vi. Social Control / Social Bond Theory
vii. Life Course Theory
viii. Trait Theory
ix. Routine Activities Theory
x. Rational Choice Theory
(2) Discuss whether or not you would consider the Juggalos a "gang".
The purpose of this assignment is to take the course knowledge and apply it to real world situations. In other words, I want you to relate it to the empirical knowledge garnered from the course texts and materials. Try to incorporate as many of the words, themes, concepts, and ideas as you can from these materials. To this end, you should include APA citations and references when discussing the film, theories, and critical criminology (see APA citations folder for help).
General Guidelines / Formatting
- The assignment should be around 2 pages.
- You need to use APA formatting when citing the course material and text (see APA guidelines folder).
- The paper needs to be double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12-point font, have 1" margins, and be written in formal Standard English.
- Please check for spelling and grammar mistakes before handing in your papers. It is always beneficial to have someone else proofread your work.
