Case Study
The Salman children have been attending the Licensed Childcare Centre where you work as an RECE, for three months now. The family consists of the father, Arjun, he is 44 years old; Arjun is married to Leksmi, she is 38 years old. They Salman's have two children; Natasha, 4 and Mahesh, 3. The Salman's are from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The kind of life that they had in the Eastern part of Congo was devastating due to the ongoing war. It was especially difficult for families like them who have small children because they live their everyday lives in fear. Like many parents, Arjun and Leksmi dreamt of providing the best quality of life that they can give to their children. They both wanted Natasha and Mahesh to live in an environment where they are safe. Their family was introduced to the Refugee Program of Canada; they were one of the many families who were granted the opportunity to immigrate to Canada under refugee status. As new refugees to London, they required support from the government to settle into a place they can now call home. Apart from their basic needs, the Salman's also need further assistance for their children, as they have health challenges. Natasha has several food allergies and Mahesh is having trouble with his balance; the reason for this is unknown. Although Arjun is now working as a farmer in a strawberry farm, he is still unable to provide fully for the family; as his salary does not suffice to pay off utility bills, groceries and other expenses. He hopes to soon find a new job which will pay better. His wife Leksmi is attending school; therefore, is not currently contributing to their income. The children are enrolled full time at the Licenced Childcare Centre; they are attending Monday through Friday 7:30-4:30. All of the staff have been very supportive with both the children and parents. However, some days are very difficult for the children to say good bye to their parents; Arjun and Leksmi are unsure on how to handle this. Prior to immigrating to Canada, the families emotional and physical well being had taken a toll on them. Now, they are dealing with the adjustment to this new community, environment and culture. The family needs all the support that they can get; they don't always know services in the community, or how to access them
1. Discuss three of the "Roles of the Educator" we should consider when working with families who have recently arrived in Canada under Refugee status.
2. Considering the children in this story, what are three specific items/activities you would add to the environment and why would you add these?
3. As discussed, Educators need a large repertoire of skills to be an effective communicator; highlight three of these from the course text (Chapter 6), put in your own words.
4. When working with the Salman family, why would it be important to have a large repertoire of communication skills; be specific about this family's situation?
5. What in your opinion are items that could be added to the Family Resource area that could benefit this Family (Chapter 8) and why?
