Question: The origin and burgeoning of Theatre presents a peculiar riddle. Sculpture, dance, music, painting, architecture, poetry all have been part of the human experience as far back as there are artifacts and evidence of human activity, i.e. funerary remains, etc. But Theatre does not appear on the scene until circa 500 BCE. And in Athens, Greece. The question arises, ' Why Athens? Why then?' There were the great civilizations of Egypt, Persia, Chaldea, etc but Theatre did not grow out of those. What was going on in Athens that set it apart from the others was the unique and very radical experiment of Democracy. Remember Athens was also the birthplace of Western Philosophy - Socrates, Plato, Aristotle. Both Philosophy and Theatre are born out of the spirit of Democracy. A spirit that requires freedom of thought and expression. A spirit that questions. A spirit that is not afraid to take a hard look at human foibles. Theatre is the art form of Democracy.
