Ethical, legal and regulatory conflicts occur when conflicting values are at odds. As you read them consider a nursing home that tries to keep resident safe (safety is a values) and how this impacts a residents autonomy (autonomy is the value) in the process. A resident who is cognitively intact has a swallowing problem from a past stroke. The resident is a risk for choking is said resident eats regular food, Safety is maximized by a mechanically altered diet - the resident receives purred (baby food) to prevent choking. Autonomy is negatively impacted, because the nursing home resident want regular food and understands the risk. In addition to values being at odds, it often places the family and the resident at odds (family does not want the resident to choke to death. Regulations often put resident rights and safety as odds. Discuss this ethical, legal and regulatory conflict.
