Question: Define attitude and discuss the three components that make up an attitude.
Case Study: Attitudes are defined in our text as "evaluative statements, either favorable or unfavorable, concerning objects, people or events" (Robbins, Coulter & DeCenzo, 2019, p. 345). Attitudes are made up of three different components: cognition, affect and behavior. The first component, cognitive component, of an attitude is "made up of the beliefs, opinions, knowledge and information held by a person" (Robbins et al., 2019, p. 345). An example of the cognitive component would include an individual stating "I feel strongly gas prices are too high." The second component is the affective component, "the emotional or feeling part of an attitude" (Robbins et al., 2019, p. 345). Building on our example, the same individual would express "I don't like to drive because of the price of gas." Finally, the third component of attitudes is the behavioral component. The behavioral component "refers to an intention to behave in a certain way toward someone or something." Thus, our example individual would choose to only purchase electric vehicles because they don't want to pay for the price of gas.
In most cases when referring to a persons attitude, one is only considering the second component, the affective component (otherwise known as the emotional component). It is important, however, for managers to practice looking deeper into attitudes of their employees in order to better understand all components of the attitude being maintained. This way managers will have a better understanding of their employees and why their beliefs/attitudes align a certain way.
