Neutralization Theory explains that crime tends to be 'neutralized' through excuses or justifications. For example, if a man commits a robbery, he may say, "I did it feed my family", thus attempting to remove the guilt. Also discussed in this theory are the "subterranean values" that exist in our culture: norms that are practiced regularly, but are considered to be illegal. For example, marijuana use is prohibited, but we allow "smoke shops". What may be some other contradictions in our culture that goes against law? What is normal, yet illegal?
