Semantics is the study of how words acquire meaning; pragmatics is a linguistic subfield that analyzes how meaning is influenced by cultural context. Morphology, syntax, and semantics are basic units of study that provide a foundation for understanding the stages of language acquisition and processing, variations of dialect and style in written English, and how computer-mediated technologies can mimic and record human language.

Weekly Learning Outcomes
This week students will
1. Identify basic elements of linguistic study, such as the sound system, grammar, and morphology.
2. Give examples of how morphology is used to create words.
3. Differentiate semantic and pragmatic properties of language in a cultural context.
Introduction
What is language and how does it work? How do words come together to create sentences, and how is the meaning in language constructed? This week provides a basic introduction to the field of linguistics and some of the core concepts in the scientific study of language. You will explore concepts in morphology, or the study of how words are formed, and you will consider how language develops and changes, as well as the differences between the dialects of contemporary languages.
