English Composition Critical Essay - Fiction/Research paper Assignment

Answer ONE of the following questions in an essay of 800-1000 words. Cite a minimum of two of the assigned articles to support your thesis. One article should refer to "A Rose for Emily" and the other should refer to "Paul's Case." Some of the questions may overlap. Your understanding of the elements of fiction, such as Plot, Character, Setting, Point of View, Theme, etc. should help you as you find evidence in the stories to support your thesis.

1. "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner and "Paul's Case" by Willa Cather feature very different protagonists who are both isolated from their respective communities. Discuss the circumstances that cause and reinforce their isolation. To answer the question, consider the following: Do Miss Emily and Paul find themselves in environments which contribute to their isolation? (Environment can include things like other characters, setting and point of view.) Do they have certain character traits and responses which reinforce their isolation? Support your thesis with VERY SPECIFIC examples from the text. Cite page numbers and if you quote directly from the stories, put these quotations in quotation marks.

2. Discuss the roles of imagination and creativity in "A Rose for Emily" and "Paul's Case." Can Miss Emily and Paul, despite the tragic outcomes of their stories, be considered imaginative and creative in some ways? Support your thesis with VERY SPECIFIC examples from the text. Cite page numbers and if you quote directly from the stories, put these quotations in quotation marks.

3. Americans tend to value individuality, autonomy and independence. Discuss how these values impact "A Rose for Emily" and "Paul's Case." Remember to have AN ORIGINAL TITLE without punctuation (unless you use the title of a work in your own title.) Otherwise DO NOT underline your title, DO NOT put it in Italics and DO NOT use quotation marks. Have a standard uniform font. When framing your thesis statement, avoid words like "I think","I feel", "I believe","In my opinion" , "In this paper I will discuss.." In your opening statement or thesis statement, refer to the short stories by name and refer to the authors by name. DO NOT use the first names of the authors.

DO NOT separate the primary sources (the stories) from the secondary sources (critical articles). Just put every entry in alphabetical order. DO NOT use the entry titles of Works Cited Page, Citations, or References. Your Works Cited page is to be called Works Cited.
