For this homework you will create a detailed disaster plan for a selected community or geographic area.
Guidelines and directives for this paper:
I. Select a small geographic community for which to create a disaster plan. e.g.,
A. the community that you chose for your community assessment
B. a large workplace community (one with many employees)
C. a university campus community
D. a public or private school community
E. an urban business community
F. a medical center
II. Perform a risk assessment of the selected community
III. Create a disaster plan for one of the following potential disasters:
A. Earthquake
B. Terrorist bomb attack(s), bioterrorism
C. Random shooter
D. Hurricane with severe flooding
E. Radiation disaster (e.g, Limerick Power Plant)
F. other as approved by the instructor
IV. Write-up a disaster plan based on the best chance to prevent injury and/or death. You may get ideas from your text and/or any reputable disaster management website. Consider:
A. What can be done to prevent/mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.?
B. Measures that can be taken to prevent or minimize injuries, death and destruction.
C. Discuss the role that the community/public health nurse might play in the implementation of the plan.
V. Address the most important feature/s for your chosen location and the specific disaster (e.g., hurricane, earthquake, tornado, random shooter, etc.)
VI. Begin your paper introducing the topic followed by a brief essay describing the community and the risk assessment.
VII. The actual plan can be in outline form. Bulleted points and/or Roman numeral outline format is fine. However, do not copy & past a disaster plan from another source. No points will be awarded if a disaster plan is copied and pasted from another source. Make it your own. Customize the plan to your chosen community or population.
VIII. Summary-Be sure to include a summary statement pulling your points together.
IX. Reference page-End with a properly formatted reference page. All in-text citations should be supported on the reference page and any references listed should also appear in-text in the form of citation/s.
X. In addition to the ATI Engage module, include at least one peer-reviewed article, and one reputable website, i.e. FEMA to support your claims.
