Critically discuss the role of the leader in facilitating a change process or performance improvement strategy
Consider the implications for capacity building and both personal and organisational level and the ways in which workplace culture may enhance or hinder the achievement of sustainable change outcomes. Students are should consider the role of the leader in developing workplaces that are flexible and able to meet the demands for change, explaining the importance of each point.
This option requires you to identify an area of health related practice that requires a change or performance improvement(PI) referring to change theory and leadership theory
the role of the leader in this particular change process or performance improvement strategy
the type(s) of leadership style(s) that can effect change
the steps required (and their relevant change theory support) to implement this aspect of workplace performance
the impact of the workplace culture
the barriers and facilitators in change processes and the management strategies
the importance of benchmarking best practice related to this performance improvement
strategies for motivating and engaging the stakeholders/staff in the performance improvement at all stages
You must include a description of the change or the specific PI strategy as well as the type of workplace within which it occurs.
Assessment 2, option 2
Critically discuss the role of the leader in facilitating any change process or performance improvement strategy in a workplace.
This could be use examples from a health related workplace but could more generally examine the components of sustainable change and the role of the leader and leadership styles covered in this unit and applied to several workplaces.
Use of relevant literature is expected, including some references from each of the three modules, as well as literature specific to the change/performance improvement strategy, to support the analysis and critical discussion.
This could include:
the role of the leader in change processes
workplace culture and its relevance to workplace change
the importance of consideration of an organisation’s vision, mission and strategic goals when considering workplace change
analysis of a change theory and its importance in the planning and implementation of any change.
the barriers and facilitators to the success of this change and how the leader can manage these.
the role of the leader in building and maintaining the team, their motivation and the workplace culture
consideration of the way in which the development of a learning organisation might facilitate a culture of commitment and problem solving and the advantage in relation to capacity building at individual, group and organisation level
Interpretation of the essay question
You must discuss the role of leadership and change theory:
e.g. Leadership is required in order meet the vision and mission of any organisation and is particularly important in creating a workplace which is flexible and able to embrace change when it is required.
You must explain the necessity of using a change theory in order to guide the process of change.
e.g. Strong leadership challenges people’s vision of the future, and builds capacity through the development of a positive work culture.
Remember the context of this unit is the building of capacity at personal, group and organisational level. It should be possible to apply this to the change or PI you are discussing.
