Assignment

Discuss how architecture is used as a means of power and control by giving examples from rise of modern colonialism (18-20th c), the postcolonial reaction AND the chapter by Faedah Totah's "Introduction: Gentrification, a "civilizing Process".

Part 1- Discuss the rise of signature architecture (or star architecture or architecture as object or consumable project) in relationship to: 1. The rise of Dubai as the "exemplar" 21st century city; and, 2. Edward Dimenberg's introduction to a discussion of the work of Diller Scofidio.

Part 2- Cite any architect (and one of their specifics proejcts) to add to/amplify this discussion.

Part 1- Discuss the relationships between culture, identity, and architecture as a medium for story telling and/or empowerment with a particular focus on who is left behind or left out of conventional architecture decisions. Use Roger Aden's "Displacing the Inconvenient" and the work of Haas and Hahn in Rio AND Philadelphia in your answer.
