How did the ideas of the Enlightenment challenge traditional ways of thinking in Europe and around the world?

How did these new scientific and rational ideas connect to the expansion of European power?

For example, with Captain Cook, how did exploration, scientific inquiry and imperialism work together?

Another example, how did the Enlightenment further ideas of both liberty and racial categorization? How is that possible?
