Science inquiry
The Next Generation Science Standards uses the term practices instead of a term like "skills" to emphasize that engaging in scientific investigation requires not only skill but also knowledge that is specific to each practice. Part of the NRC's intent is to better explain and extend what is meant by "inquiry" in science and the range of cognitive, social, and physical practices that it requires. Scientific inquiry involves the formulation of a question that can be answered through investigation.
According to the National Science Teacher Association (NSTA) (2009), effective science instruction includes:
• having pedagogical knowledge;
• providing learning opportunities that meet the individual needs of students, placing the learner at the center of instruction; and
• facilitating learning opportunities that develop students' conceptual understanding.
What evidence can we use to determine where the plate boundaries exist?
Use the resources to:
Discuss the relationships between earthquakes, mountains and volcanoes.
Then pick one location and describe the type of boundary (convergent, divergent or transfer) that exists in that location. Give the types of Earth's features you see at that boundary.
