Recently, Canada has begun to publicly acknowledge its own dark past of 'Indian Boarding Schools' with the recent discovery of an Indigenous children's mass grave at a notorious Canadian boarding school. In the same period, 53 burial sites at U.S. Indian boarding schools have also been discovered. According to many Indigenous children who survived to adulthood, the schools were more a prison camp than a place for education. When Zitkala-Sa wrote her memories of the boarding school, nothing was done about the treatment of Native children.
