Problem
Scenario: Cassie, a 50-year-old Hispanic case manager employed at a local community agency. Cassie receives a referral from the jail social worker for assistance on her new client Daymond, a 19-year-old African-American male. Upon Cassie's meeting with Daymond, she learns that he was recently released from jail after being charged with possession of a controlled substance, MDMA (ecstasy). However, he has a pending court date related to this charge in 30 days and could possibly be facing additional jail time. Daymond is homeless and stays with different "friends" and occasionally his older sister, who helps him out by providing money and food and has sole custody of his 3-year-old daughter, Mya. Daymond has a history of using cannabis and MDMA. He was diagnosed with depression when he was a senior in high school, but did not receive treatment. Daymond is interested in obtaining employment so he can become self- sufficient. However, Daymond believes he will have a hard time reaching these goals because he is an African-American male and fears he will be judged by his past mistakes.
