The ACA Code of Ethics (2014) prohibits a counselor from engaging in sexual or romantic relationships with current clients as well as the current client's family members or romantic partner. Furthermore, counselors should not engage in romantic relationships with clients or others mentioned above for a period of at least 5 years after the date of the last client contact if at all.

  • After reading the resources for this unit, identify and discuss the potential harm that may come to a client when a counselor engages in an intimate or romantic relationship with a current or former client. Please discuss and cite specific ethical codes.
  • According to the unit readings, it is recognized that human service professionals at times may feel romantic or sexual feelings towards clients.  As a future or practicing counseling and human service professional, what actions might you take to address any romantic or sexual feelings that you may experience towards a client? And what actions might you take to address any romantic or sexual feelings a client has towards you as a counseling and human service professional?
  • Even innocent and unintentional physical contact with a client can be detrimental in a counseling and human service setting.  Please identify and discuss two key pieces of information that you read about this week that counseling and human services professionals should be cognizant of when it comes to physical contact with a client. What are some codes which might also apply to these situations?
