A 42-year-old woman makes an appointment with an orthopedist after experiencing a shooting or piercing pain in her foot when walking. When asked how often she wears high heels, she answers, "Daily." After a brief examination of her legs and feet, the orthopedist orders an x-ray image of her foot and ankle. When he reviews the image, he notes an incomplete crack in one of the women's metatarsals, the bones in the forefoot.
