Question: You make dozens of choices and decisions each day, often without being consciously aware of them. Because critical thinking may be more rigorous than everyday thinking, it is important to recognize some factors that can influence the effectiveness of critical thinking, including reason, communication, and emotion.
Reason and Emotion - (CH 2) Chapter Two discusses the relationship between reason and emotion. Reason helps us analyze beliefs and evidence, make well-thought-out decisions, and resolve problems. How do emotions positively and negatively influence critical thinking? How do you balance your emotion and reason when making decisions? How do faith, stereotypes, and culture factor into your thinking?
Language (CH 3, pgs. 142-149): "Language serves many functions; it can be informative, expressive, directive, nonverbal, or ceremonial, to name only four" (Boss, 2021, p. 72). Choose one function of language and provide an example of it in action.
Communication Styles: (CH 3, pgs. 166-173) Our text notes, "There are four basic types of communication styles: assertive, aggressive, passive, and passive-aggressive" (Boss, 2021, p. 81). Choose one communication style and the challenges it causes. How do sex, race, and culture complicate this situation?
Explain the role of communication in critical thinking and provide an example of when and how language or communication influenced your critical thinking.
Rhetorical Devices: (CH 3, pgs. 175-185) The readings present four types of rhetorical devices, used to persuade (Euphemisms, dysphemism, sarcasm and hyperbole). Which rhetorical device do you feel is the most effective and why?
