Louis XIV, considered one of the more enlightened of the French monarchs, was a patron of the arts and promoted theater, dance and music. He was wise enough toappoint Jean Baptiste Colbert as his minister of finance. Colbert calculated a push to overhaul the Louvre as a first project. After this success, the focus was on upgrading Louis XIV father's hunting lodge at Versailles. This is where Louis XIV would establish his court.The Louvre project is an example of French Classicism. The entire building is upheld on a podium. The Romans style is clearly linking Louis XIV to the Roman emperors. Colbert overhauled the tax system, making it more hones, but he was able to stimulate the French economy such that it financed Louis XIVs projects. The majority of these would be at Versailles.
