Cross Cultural Counseling Research Project Guidelines

A. Select a culture of your choice. The selected culture cannot be the culture you grew up in.

B. Prepare a power point presentation on your culture including the following topics:

I. Map of the country where your culture is located

II. Flag of the country with a brief explanation of the colors, symbols, etc.

III. Type of government the culture/country has (socialist, democratic, Prime Minister, etc.)

IV. A brief overview of the history of the culture (just include significant dates, wars or events that are important to the culture's past).

V. Currency used in the country (dollar, peso, pound, yen, etc.)

VI. Characteristics of the culture (traditions, customs, special celebrations like: El dia de los Muertos in Mexico, St. Patrick's day in Ireland, etc.)

VII. Predominant religion (Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, etc.)

VIII. Typical foods of the culture

IX. Popular sports (soccer, rugby, baseball, etc.)

X. Famous people (if any) from the culture or country

XI. Fashion. The way people dress (Include this if this is a significant feature of the culture. Example: Middle eastern apparel. Paris is known for its trendy fashion, etc.

MENTAL HEALTH: This topic must be included in your power point. It could cover things like:

1. The # of people in the culture suffering from certain mental illnesses like: depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc.
2. The # of psychiatric hospitals available to serve the mental health needs of the population.
3. The # of mental health professionals available to serve patients
4. Is mental health a priority in the culture?
5. Type of insurance coverage or health care system of the culture (private, universal, etc.)
6. Any other mental health data relevant to the culture

NOTE: Feel free to include any additional information you feel is important that you would like others to know about the culture.
