Assignment:

Draw a connection circle of the chocolate bar's "true cost" on your computer or a piece of paper, including all the variables/parts identified in this previous answer.

"Let's consider the lifecycle of a chocolate bar:

  1. Resources: The key ingredient, cocoa, is primarily grown in West Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. Sugar, another essential component, is grown in tropical and temperate regions around the globe. Milk (for milk chocolate) comes from dairy farms worldwide.
  2. Production: The cocoa beans are fermented, dried, and shipped to factories where they are roasted, cracked, and ground into a paste known as chocolate liquor. Sugar and milk (for milk chocolate) are added, and the mixture is further processed to create the final product.
  3. Transporting: These steps could occur in different locations worldwide, requiring significant transportation. The final product is then distributed globally.
  4. Processes: The process includes cultivation of cocoa and sugar, dairy farming, cocoa fermentation and drying, chocolate production, and packaging.
  5. Consumption: Chocolate bars are a universal treat enjoyed across the globe in every season.
  6. Waste includes cocoa pod husks, chocolate production byproducts, and packaging material.

The system's main parts include the cocoa, sugar, and dairy farms, the processing factories, the global transportation and distribution networks, retailers, consumers, and waste management systems."

Be sure to include all direct connections from cause to effect and label the polarity of those connections. Also, pull out and draw any feedbacks that you identify from the connection circle. What kind of feedback loop(s) is it? Scan your drawing and upload it as a jpg or pdf.
