Questions: Consider the following research hypothesis, "High dietary intake of soy milk is associated with lower recurrence of breast cancer in women diagnosed previously with this disease". This hypothesis was examined in a historical prospective cohort study which followed 534 women who had breast cancer in remission. The women in the study were identified from a hospital registry. Diet was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire through an interview, and classified 132 women into a high soy milk group. After 15 years, the recurrence of breast cancer was noted in 26 women in the high soy milk group and 93 women in the low soy milk group.
