Further the student will complete a self-reflection (Annex 2). In addition, the assessor will provide a detailed feedback (Annex 3). Details of each part of the role and all criteria for evaluation (Annex 1, 2, 3) will be provided to the student prior to the assessment.
Part A:
This is a group activity. Working in groups of 5, students will collaboratively delegate one topic for each team member. Then the student will act as the leader in educating their team members on the chosen topic.
• Importance of empathy in personal communication
• Significance of an inclusive approach for good leadership
• Emotional intelligence
• How to manage workplace relationships
• Understanding leadership styles in various contexts
Part B:
This is a role play in two acts. Students will take turns in playing the role of HR Manager. The team members will play project team leaders.
Role play scenario Act 1:
Zing Technologies is hypothetical organisation. It is a market leader in innovative apps. They are start-up that has grown rapidly in the past five years and currently employs 500 people.
The CEO is committed to gender diversity in the organisation. However, there are at least five project teams in the organisation that have very few female employees. The recruitment team have highlighted that most of the female applicants have requested for flexibility in work arrangements so that they are able to do their school runs. However, the project team leaders have stated that they are unable to offer this flexibility.
The CEO has requested the HR Manager to meet the project team leaders to understand why they are unable to offer flexibility to the potential female applicants.
The HR manager is a strong supporter of flexibility. In fact, the HR manager had conducted a research that showed flexibility increased diversity and also productivity. In addition, provision of flexibility has personal relevance for the HR Manager as the HR Manager's sister (a single mum) has recently lost her dream due to non-provision of flexibility.
Details for the role play Act 1:
In this role play, you are meeting the project team leaders. For the success of this meeting, you are aware that you will need to manage your own personal emotions and take a collaborative approach and understand the project team leaders' constraints.
This meeting will be conducted in a role-play format. In the role play, the Project Team Lead will raise a range of reasons for not embracing flexibility. For example, the Project Team Lead might say
"Providing flexibility to my team will make them lazy"
"Flexibility is a concept that is good in theory. It makes teams unproductive. Can you give one example where it has worked?"
"I have a big team; I can't have them coming and going when they please!"
"If we give flexibility, they will not meet deliverables"
"My performance depends on meeting deadlines; with flexibility my team will not meet a single deadline"
As the HR Manager, you will need to demonstrate transformational leadership by using effective communication techniques to (a) understand Project Team Lead's constraints (b) lead and guide the discussions to provide a culture of cohesion and inclusiveness.
Role play scenario Act 2:
The HR flexibility policy has been rolled out for six months. However, there have been many instances of non-compliance by project teams.
Details for the role play Act 2:
In consult with the CEO, to ensure compliance, you have decided to take a transactional leadership approach and have another meeting with project team leaders. In this meeting, you will highlight the instances of non-compliance and detail to the team leaders the CEO's direction that recruitment will escalate all instances of non-provision of flexibility to the CEO. Further, you will highlight to the project team leaders that performance evaluation will factor in compliance to the flexibility policy. In addition, you will provide the leaders with an overview as to how reasonable provision of flexibility is an expectation under the Fair Work Act 2009 (FW Act)
