Unit 4 Construction Practice & Management - Higher Nationals in Construction and the Built Environment

Assignment - The integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM), Health and Safety and modern methods of construction, into construction planning, practice and procedures.

1. A 2500 word report. This report should be well-structured, comprising sections such as an introduction, main body, conclusion, references and appendices. You are encouraged to make use of images, graphics, drawings and other research material in support of your presentation. Any material that is derived from other sources must be appropriately referenced using a standard form of citation.

2. You will need to have an additional appendix of relevant literature which has been carefully reviewed to verify suitability and accuracy around the health and safety surrounding materials.

Learning Outcome 1: Discuss the key stages in a construction project, and how Building Information Modelling informs the different stages
Learning Outcome 2: Analyse how the construction industry has developed suitable collaboration strategies in support of greater recognition of Health and Safety.

Assignment Brief

In this assignment, you are expected to respond to the brief in your personal context. Therefore, assume that the company you currently work for are interested in exploring collaborative strategies, including Building Information Modelling (BIM), Health and Safety and modern methods of construction.

You are to present your findings to the company, in written format as a report. The purpose of this research is to facilitate the company to embed these new strategies into every aspect of the large and small-scale projects that they undertake.
The report should contain :

1. A detailed analysis of how the construction industry has evolved in terms of innovative construction methods and contracts.
2. An analysis of how construction has developed in terms of innovation, design, and within contracts for micro and macro projects, and the interrelationship with BIM
- Identify, with examples, modern construction processes and sequences used within today's industry, highlighting the way they respond to sustainability needs
- Explain contract planning techniques used within micro and macro projects
- Identify where BIM impacts upon operations and construction companies
3. An evaluation of the impact of Health & Safety legislation, how it has evolved the drivers for it, and its advantages or weaknesses within the construction
4. A demonstration of how the construction has benefited through changes in Health & Safety legislation
- Explain how Health & Safety has now become an integrated part of the construction process
- Describe the government legislation which has benchmarked Health and Safety within the construction
- Discuss the role of collaboration in ensuring safe working practices
