Case Study: John the Music Lover
John is a thirty year old man with an intellectual disability. For many years, he lived in an institution where he was only allowed to hear music at the staff's discretion. For the past three years he has lived in a group home with two other people who also have disabilities. He loves his new home and the choices is can make about his life.
John loves music and he loves to play his music loud! He also likes to have music on all the time and he likes to listen to the same songs over and over. If John is at home, his music is playing. At the start of the day he plays his music quietly, but as the day goes on his music becomes louder and louder. John's roommates don't share his appreciation for the volume and repetition of music. It's becoming a point of conflict in their relationship. John sees his right to play music as a factor of his new life in the community and he is not willing to change his ways.
