Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for compelled labor or commercial sex for labor or service through force (Rector & Stanley, 2022). Victims can be of any age, race, gender, or economic status and can be trafficked into various types of human abuse, including sex, medically assisted reproduction, and forced labor.
The prevalence of human trafficking remains largely unknown. The unknown prevalence and well-established physical and mental health consequences have made this a public health problem. Research suggests that the majority of victims have encounters with healthcare providers. Nurses must be aware of the subtle behaviors of the victim to be able to intervene. Often, victims of trafficking do not identify as such during the healthcare encounter, and healthcare providers must be ready to recognize them as potential victims of human trafficking.
It has become such a concern in Florida that the legislature has mandated all nurses complete continuing education hours in human trafficking, to begin with the 2019 license renewal. Nurses are at the frontlines of screening for human trafficking and facilitating effective response protocols.
A major response measure developed by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) was the National Human Trafficking Hotline. This is a 24-hour operation that is available in over 200 languages.
Sexual Assault is "defined as "any nonconsensual act" (Rector and Stanley, 2022, p. 924). The statics on sexual assault are staggeringly high. The majority of perpetrators were either current or former intimate partners or acquaintances.
Many celebrities are now highlighting this problem. If you haven't heard Ashton Kutcher speak on this topic it's worth a Google search to listen. He is articulate on the subject.
The question arises, do most of us even realize the extent of the problem? Would we recognize a victim if we were faced with one? The community health nurse may be instrumental in implementing strategies that may be helpful in protecting vulnerable populations. The community health nurse can be instrumental in protecting vulnerable populations through strategies that control violence in the community.
