Gender bias occurs when a job is ranked higher or lower than it should be because the job is predominantly held by one gender. When you think of the history of teachers and nurses, these were jobs traditionally held by women, whereas jobs traditionally held by men included accountants and lawyers. When gender inequalities occur it can be demoralizing for staff and it can cost an organization a lot of money to correct the inequalities. There are at least six ways in which gender bias can occur in organizations. Rating the jobs incorrectly, valuing one compensable factor more than others or devaluing a compensable factor can create problems with the point system, impacting its reliability.
