For this assignment you will be viewing the movie "Marty" and analyzing it according to various communication principles we have discussed this semester.  The goal of the paper is not to write a summary or 'book report' of what happened in the movie; but to break down the movie and discuss the interpersonal concepts that are visible within the film.

Below are several questions that are to be discussed in the paper.  You will choose 4 questions and discuss them in your paper.

In order to discuss the chosen concepts, be sure to select a scene(s) that relates to the concept. Clearly explain how the scene illustrates that particular concept.  Justify your discussion with explanations and example(s) from the film.  The goal here is to demonstrate an accurate knowledge of course concepts by applying class material to what you saw in the film.  The goal is to demonstrate and use the course concepts here to explain/justify your responses.

Requirements:

  • Typed, double-spaced, standard margins/font
  • Essay format to include and intro and conclusion, and if answered thoroughly should be approximately 3-4 pages.
  • College level writing must be demonstrated

Questions

  • What stages of relationship development do you witness between Marty and Claire?  Do they follow the stages appropriately? Why?
  • What types of conflict management styles are present in the film? Justify your observations.
  • What do you perceive Marty's self concept to be and which of the origins of self concept  do you think contributed to this? Why?
  • How does culture play a role in this film? Which of the  cultural dimension differences are most influential and how do they have an impact on his life?
  • Draw Marty's Johari Window and provide examples/discussion for each of his 4 quadrants.
  • What types of listening do you see portrayed in the movie?  How are these displayed?**Familiarize yourself with the late policies found in the syllabus!
