Assignment:
After reading Chapter, consider these 2 questions. Be sure to have read the chapter before posting. An example of the sociological perspective is the common sighting of Wisconsin folks, in winter, wearing flip flops and/or shorts. This is a very common sighting and we take it to be "normal" but indeed it is strange. Our culture/social environment strongly influence our perspective and norms. As it is stated in the textbook, the general categories in which we fall shape our experiences and life chances (sociological perspective), often times in much more serious ways than our clothing choices. Conversely, those in Florida may bring out the winter clothes when it is 50 degrees outside. One last example is how many folks in Wisconsin drink beer while watching sports. Imagine if everyone drank coffee instead.
After reading the chapter and critically thinking (Employability Essentials) about what you see, answer these questions. Don't forget about your required thoughtful reply to someone else's post.
1. List an example of something you see that is strange but familiar in your social environment (culture).
2. Also, after reading Chapter and considering the influence of our social environment, are we really free to choose our marriage partners? I am not asking if this is legal but really how free are you. The Sociological Perspective suggests that the general categories in which we fall shape our experiences and life chances, meaning our social class, gender, ethnicity, education, city, country, etc. shape who we are and our choices. Use the assigned chapters in your response.
Be sure to use supporting materials in all your responses in the discussion board.
