1. Part of understanding a play is understanding the context within which it is written. You get some sense of this from the prefatory notes before the play, but sometimes you need a little legwork to construct the world at the time the play was written. Think of plays as a historical snapshot of a historical time.?In Susan Glaspell's Trifles consider the year the play takes place, the year it was written, the location of the play, etc. ?Discus in an essay format about the role of women and the men, discuss how the two groups analyze the home. At the end of the play this small but significant dialogue happens: ?County Attorney (crosses to up left door facetiously): Well, Henry, at least we found out that she was not going to quilt it. She was going to - what is it you call it, ladies?? Mrs. Hale (standing center below table facing front, her hand against her pocket): We call it - knot it, Mr. Henderson.?Discuss the implications of Mrs. Hale and what she truly means to say.

2. Discuss the importance of the women as a theme in the play. Think about how the concept is treated, how the characters are perceive and, about what the playwright is saying about women through the drama. Consider if the theme is successfully explored.
