Assignment: Although individualism is a superior value in western cultures, it is not important in Japanese firms. In its place is an emphasis on teamwork. Most Japanese companies believe that people and products are interdependent.

Most Japanese firms test candidates to ensure they are not only competent and technically skilled but also oriented toward teamwork. They have a stringent selection process. Employees are expected to work together as a team, be comfortable solving problems collaboratively and be motivated to achieve collective outcomes. Most Japanese firms have a rigorous onboarding program that includes team-building activities to build their trust in teams. Teams are used in the production process and at every level and function in the organisation. They recognise the power of teams. They believe that collective knowledge is more significant than individual knowledge.

Question:

a) Discuss the importance of teamwork in Japanese firms. Explain how Japanese firms ensure effective teamwork among employees based on the facets from the scenario.

b) Trusting the team is essential in Japanese firms. Propose THREE (3) ways leader can develop trust in their teams.

c) Most Japanese employees do not give differing opinions in a team. They generally have similar views. Explain ONE (1) reason for this behaviour. One danger of such behaviour is groupthink.
