If you are a classroom teacher, take note of the parent-teacher interactions during the drop-off and pickup times during a three-four day period. What families are missing contacts with you? Why? What types of conversations are you having? Are you saying more than "hello" and "good-bye"? What are the children doing while you are talking to the parents? Look critically at your communication with the parents. What are you going to do to improve? What are you successful at, right now?
Observe parents and teachers during a drop-off or pick-up time. What do you note in the communication? Pay close attention to both the VERBAL interactions and the NON-VERBAL interactions. What kinds of topics are discussed? What are the children doing while the parents interact with the children?
Note your personal communication. Discuss the importance of communication. Assess your strengths in communication as they apply to personal and professional encounters. Discuss your communication weaknesses and evaluate how these may hinder successful personal and professional encounters. What are your plans for overcoming these weaknesses? How can you be productive with your strengths?
