Safe Practice and Enhancing Performance Assignment -

Aims: To promote a secure understanding of both physical and psychological factors affecting dance performance and teaching.

Learning Outcomes -

Subject Knowledge and Understanding (students will have)

4. Secure knowledge and understanding of research issues in specialist fields such as dance medicine, dance science and sports science, and their impact on dance teaching.

6. Evaluate the roles of different professionals in supporting the dance student.

8. Understand how to apply ideas from varying techniques to promote healthy and safe dancers and safe teaching.

Content - This module examines the relationship between the physical and psychological dimensions of dance performance and teaching developing from DE402: The Healthy Dancer a more secure knowledge and understanding of the musculoskeletal system, the growing body and supplementary and somatic practices for dance. Students will be required to reflect on their own personal experiences and to relate these to module content. It is expected that students will engage with current research in dance science. The following are specific areas which will be considered in the module:

• Somatic practices
• Structure, function, abnormalities/injuries of, and conditioning for the spine, hip, knee, ankle and foot
• Growth and implications for dance training and teaching
• Hypermobility
• Core stability
• Psychological and emotional wellbeing in dance performance and teaching
• Proprioception and balance

Assessment: Formative: Module study tasks and draft submission of summative assessment Summative: Essay, 3,000 words.

Assessment Details: Critically discuss the implications of the adolescent growth spurt with regards to training, performance optimisation, and injury risk reduction in dance.

Make reference to:

• The physical changes experienced during adolescence.
• The hormonal and psychological challenges faced during adolescence.
• Challenges for the teacher in managing training for the whole class who may be experiencing the impact of adolescence at varying times and to different extents.

Assessment Criteria: The work is expected to demonstrate:

• Secure knowledge and understanding of the implications of growth on dance with regards to in performance enhancement.
• Secure knowledge and understanding of implications of growth on dance with regards to injury risk reduction.
• Secure knowledge and understanding of the role of the teacher in ensuring safe and effective training for the growing dancer.
• Ability to engage in critical assessment, support different arguments through reference to practical examples, and using appropriate vocabulary.
