Research the history of marriage and the role of wives to contextualize marriage. Zora Neale Hurston and Stephen Crane are two American Authors who depict the institution of marriage in a small town. However, the lives of the two couples in "Sweat" and "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" differ completely.
In a five-page MLA formatted paper, compare and evaluate the two married couples and using direct language from the texts discuss how wives and women are valued.
When you have identified specific details that show how the wives are valued, discuss the causes and/or the implications of this value. In other words, show critical thinking.
Consider how Crane depicts the wife and how Hurston depicts the wife. Do race and historical trauma play into the value depicted? How does the historical situation inform the experiences of the marriages.
