Case: Background: Beginning in 1964 both the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV, North Vietnam) and the United States (U.S.) made moves toward escalating the conflict in the Republic of Vietnam (RV, South Vietnam). Those moves ultimately converged in the critical year of 1968 when the Communist forces launched the Tet Offensive across South Vietnam. The fighting lasted most of the year and left both sides exhausted setting the stage for the next phase of the conflict defined by continuing fighting, but the start of negotiations as well. Those talks culminated in the Paris Agreement in 1973 that ended U.S. involvement in the war.
