Assignment - Business Operations in Engineering
Learning outcomes - On completion of this unit a learner should:
1. Understand how an engineering company operates.
2. Understand how external factors and the economic environment can affect the operation of an engineering company.
3. Know how legislation, regulation and other constraints impact on the operation of engineering businesses.
4. Be able to apply costing techniques to determine the cost effectiveness of an engineering activity.
Scenario - You are working as a Business Operations Manager in SHELL, which is a renowned oil and gas engineering firm. Your firm is amongst the top 10 most influential firms in the oil and gas industry sector.
With the assistance from HR department, your job is to train the new employees in understanding the business operations of your firm. For this, your duties and responsibilities include - Writing a 1500 word report on the 3 tasks mentioned below,
Task 1 -
- Introduction to different sectors in which engineering companies operate and discussing their functions.
- Explaining the different ways in which the improvements in information flow could benefit any organization and SHELL in particular. Give an Example of information flow in a firm, for a particular engineering activity.
- Sharing knowledge of the organisational types of engineering companies for three different sectors (Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary).
Task 2 -
- Discuss the impact of legislation and external factors on a specific operation within an engineering company (and also in SHELL, particularly) in terms of benefits and limitations.
- Explain the environmental and social constraints that impact on the way an engineering business operates.
Task 3 -
- Carry out costing techniques to determine the cost effectiveness of the engineering activity (from the example that you selected in task 1) and discuss how it could be improved.
- Also perform costing techniques to make a final make-or-buy decision for a given product (choose any engineering product as an example).
Note - All three tasks to be answered fully and to a high standard.
